Overview
This profile focuses on IBM Consulting rather than treating all IBM offerings as consulting services. The reviewed practices support engagements ranging from architecture and governance advice to application implementation and ongoing operations. Buyers should distinguish these delivery responsibilities in the contract: a strategy engagement does not establish migration responsibility, and access to watsonx software does not include consulting implementation. The client studies provide examples of delivered systems, including conversational banking, public-benefits processing, airline applications and security operations. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]
Services and delivery
AI strategy and architecture advisory
Advisory. Defines AI strategy, assesses data readiness and develops architecture to prepare customers for AI solution delivery. [8]
AI solution implementation
Implementation. Designs, builds and scales AI solutions, including agentic AI integration, rather than providing software access alone. [8]
Data strategy and architecture advisory
Advisory. Develops data strategy and data-fabric architecture to guide modernization and reusable data products. [9]
Data modernization and data product implementation
Implementation. Modernizes data environments and builds reusable data products. Named platforms include AWS, Databricks, Microsoft, Salesforce and Snowflake. [9]
Machine-learning model development and deployment
Implementation. Builds and deploys models, with lifecycle services covering model management and monitoring. This is distinct from ordinary data modernization. [9]
AI governance advisory
Advisory. Defines governance strategy, organizational accountability frameworks and AI risk-management arrangements. [10]
AI governance implementation
Implementation. Integrates automated controls with data infrastructure and implements multi-model governance using watsonx.governance, including explainability, fairness and transparency guardrails. [10]
Cloud and enterprise technology strategy
Advisory. Provides cloud architecture, platform strategy, FinOps advisory, technology strategy and operating-model design. This scope is advisory, not a migration commitment. [2]
Application modernization roadmaps
Advisory. Develops roadmaps for legacy application modernization, separately from executing migration and engineering work. [11]
Application migration and modernization implementation
Implementation. Migrates, refactors, replatforms, rearchitects and containerizes applications. Mainframe work includes cloud integration, application extension and cloud-native development on mainframes. [11]
Digital product and platform advisory
Advisory. Defines digital products and platforms and advises on product strategy and operating models before or alongside engineering delivery. [12]
Custom digital product engineering
Implementation. Designs, develops, modernizes and enhances standalone applications and larger digital platforms. General engineering is not automatically an AI service. [12]
Managed cloud and application operations
Managed services. Manages cloud infrastructure, custom software and enterprise applications, including monitoring, issue resolution, resource optimization and continuous improvement. Named platforms include SAP, Oracle, Salesforce, Microsoft and Workday. [13]
Security exposure and operational-technology advisory
Advisory. Provides exposure-management and operational-technology security work alongside its threat-management services. [14]
Incident response services
Implementation. Provides cybersecurity incident response as a commercial service distinct from ongoing monitoring. [14]
Managed threat detection and response
Managed services. Runs analyst-led security monitoring, alert analysis and response across hybrid environments. [14]
watsonx software portfolio
Software product. Markets watsonx.ai, watsonx.data and watsonx.governance software, with trial and demonstration routes. Product access alone does not establish implementation services. [3]
Institute for Business Value research
Research. Publishes technology-based business insights. These publications are research, not evidence of implementation responsibility. [15]
General business strategy advisory
Non-technical service. Provides general business strategy advice, kept separate here from the technology practices linked from the strategy page. [16]
Company details
Industries and client fit
The reviewed references demonstrate work in banking, airlines, public administration and industrial security. They establish examples of delivery in those settings, rather than equivalent experience for every proposed architecture or industry requirement. [4] [6] [5] [7]
Track record
IBM reports helping develop and deploy Virgin Money’s Redi conversational banking assistant using Microsoft technologies and APIs to core systems. For New Jersey’s Department of Community Affairs, IBM describes a benefits portal using Power Pages, Power Platform, Azure AI Document Intelligence, Azure Databricks and Power BI, reporting an 88% reduction in adjudication timelines. [4] [5]
For Lufthansa Group, IBM describes UX workshops, legacy rearchitecture, enhancement and ongoing maintenance of an Azure-hosted ground-operations application. Its Delta Air Lines case reports more than 590 workloads migrated using Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS. The January 2024 Delta case presents the 25–30% speed-to-market improvement as expected, not achieved. [6] [17]
The October 2022 Doosan Digital Innovation case describes security assessment, a global security operations center, endpoint detection and response, SOAR integration and managed detection and response. IBM reports roughly 85% shorter response times. These historical results and product references do not establish current contracting options or expected results for another buyer. [7]
Engagement and delivery
Delivery scope varies by engagement. Social Security Scotland’s reference describes IBM and Nordcloud providing FinOps advisory, Cloudability deployment and AWS engineering support; the customer chose not to implement the fully managed service. This reference supports advisory and engineering responsibility, not fully outsourced operations for that customer. [18]
Scope and limitations
This is a selected-practice review, not an exhaustive inventory of IBM offerings.
Client outcomes are IBM-published claims, not independently validated results or forecasts for other buyers.
The supplied evidence does not establish pricing, minimum engagement size, contractual service levels or local team availability.
Historical case-study technologies and delivery arrangements require confirmation for a current proposal.

Which IBM entity, acquired company or subcontractor owns delivery, support and escalation?
Which software licenses are additional, and can the proposed solution operate on our existing stack?
What support hours, service levels, exit obligations and knowledge-transfer provisions are included?
Which recent references match our architecture, industry and proposed delivery scope?
